My Computer Is Running Slowly

My Computer Is Running Slowly

A slow computer is usually caused by too many programs running simultaneously, insufficient disk space, too many browser tabs, or a computer that has not been restarted recently. These steps address the most common causes and can be done without helpdesk assistance.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Restart your computer. If you have not restarted in several days, this alone can dramatically improve performance. Shutting down and turning back on is not the same as restarting on modern Windows systems. Use Start > Restart specifically.
  2. Close unnecessary applications. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and sort by Memory or CPU. Close applications you are not actively using by selecting them and clicking End task.
  3. Reduce browser tabs. Each browser tab consumes memory. If you have dozens of tabs open, close the ones you do not need. Bookmark them if you want to return later.
  4. Check disk space. Open File Explorer, right-click your C: drive, and select Properties. If available space is below 10 GB, your computer needs cleanup. See our article on How to Free Up Disk Space.
  5. Disable startup programs. In Task Manager, click the Startup tab. Disable programs you do not need at login by right-clicking and selecting Disable. Do not disable anything you do not recognize. If unsure, contact the helpdesk.

If the Problem Persists

If your computer is still slow after these steps, the hardware may not meet current requirements. Submit a ticket and CMO IT Services will assess performance remotely.
