Windows Update Is Failing or Stuck
Windows updates are managed by CMO IT Services through your organization's device management system. Occasionally, an update may fail to install or appear stuck at a certain percentage. This is usually caused by insufficient disk space, a pending restart, or a temporary conflict.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Restart your computer. Many updates require a restart to complete. If you have been postponing a restart, do it now. Use Start > Restart (not Shut Down).
- Check disk space. Windows updates require free disk space to download and install. If your C: drive is nearly full, see our article on How to Free Up Disk Space.
- Wait. Some updates, especially feature updates, can take 30 to 60 minutes. If the screen shows a percentage and your computer is not frozen, let it finish. Do not power off during an update installation.
- Run Windows Update manually. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. If an update failed, Windows will retry it.
- Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Windows Update. This detects and fixes common update problems automatically.
If the Problem Persists
If updates continue to fail after these steps, submit a ticket with the error code (if shown) and which update is failing. CMO IT Services can diagnose and resolve the issue remotely.
Still failing? Submit a ticket and a CMO IT Services technician will assist you.
