An Application Keeps Freezing or Crashing
When an application freezes or crashes repeatedly, the issue is usually a corrupted installation, a conflict with another program, or insufficient system resources. These steps help isolate and resolve the problem.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Force close the frozen application. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Find the application in the list, select it, and click End task. Reopen the application and try again.
- Restart your computer. This clears temporary files and resets services that the application depends on.
- Check for updates. If the application has a built-in update mechanism, check for and install any available updates. For Microsoft Office apps, open any Office application, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Repair the installation. For Office applications: go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365, click the three dots (...), and select Modify > Quick Repair. If Quick Repair does not help, try Online Repair.
- Check system resources. Open Task Manager and check if your memory or CPU is maxed out when the crash occurs. If so, close other applications to free up resources.
If the Problem Persists
Submit a ticket with the application name, what you were doing when it crashed, and any error messages. If the application shows an error code, include that as well.
Still crashing? Submit a ticket and a CMO IT Services technician will assist you.
