My Second Monitor Is Not Detected
When a second monitor is not detected, the issue is almost always a physical connection problem, a display setting, or a driver issue. These steps cover the most common causes.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Check the cable. Ensure the cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or VGA) is securely connected at both ends. Try a different cable if available, as cables are a frequent point of failure.
- Check the monitor. Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input source. Most monitors have an input/source button that cycles through HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.
- Detect the display manually. Right-click the desktop, select Display settings, scroll down, and click Detect. Windows will search for connected displays.
- Try a different port. If your computer has multiple video outputs, try plugging the monitor into a different one.
- Check display adapters. If you are using a docking station or adapter (e.g., USB-C to HDMI), try connecting the monitor directly to the computer to rule out the adapter as the problem.
- Update your display driver. Right-click the Start button, select Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver.
